iTunes "Smart Playlists" are perfect for podcasts.....I may be late to this party but I learned about this while looking to sync podcasts and other iTunes content with my new Droid phone. Since I did not want to download all my podcasts on my phone one step was to create a "smart playlist" for podcasts, that keeps the phone updated with only the most recent 50 podcasts. This is how the pop looks on Wintel computers running the latest version of iTunes, and how you should configure the pull downs. You can adjust how many podcasts you want on this playlist - I chose 50. I found this helped not only for phone sync but to quickly check on the most recent podcast content downloaded. It also seems to compel iTunes to keep updated on podcast downloads from podcasts I have subscribed to - something I have had trouble getting iTunes to do seamlessly in the past.
