The BBC reports that the British Secretary of State for Justice has approved a new rule to empower the Information Commissioner's Office to impose fines up to £500,000 for data breaches.

Fines will be in proportion to the severity of the breach and the resources of the erring organization.

Just a quick note to say that within the next 2 weeks we will be releasing version 10.1.3.5.2 of the Oracle IRM Desktop.

This desktop will support the recently released Windows 7 operating system, Adobe Reader 9.2 and Lotus Notes 8.5. There have also been some minor changes in the layout of the control panel.

When talking with customers they often ask if Oracle IRM is a DRM technology. I thought I would therefore go over the main differences between the consumer technology world of DRM and the business world of IRM (or ERM/EDRM). First lets detail what the acronyms stand for.

This is the first of many articles I will be writing which walk you through downloading, installing, configuring and using Oracle IRM. From its very creation this technology has been designed to be simple to use from both the end user and the administrators perspective. In these articles I will go step by step, over every detail so you can, by following my instructions, have a fully working IRM system. When well prepared, you should be able to complete this within a few hours.

This release contains a few bug fixes that some customers have requested. These fixes are largely in the areas of Excel macros and clashes with products from other IRM vendors. It is however a fairly minor release, and we do not expect most customers to upgrade to it.

It is now available for download from Oracle Technology Network and eDelivery.

Email is a very useful technology. It allows for people to easily and quickly communicate with vast numbers of people over great distances within minutes. However there is a downside to the ease of use, sensitive information can be broadcast with little effort and sometimes by mistake. How often have you been writing an email, filling in the "To" list and have allowed the email client to search through your history of previous emails and suggest the right recipient?
