Since SAP announced the intent to purchase Sybase I and my colleagues have gone from busy to, as we say in North Carolina, "Wiiiide Open" <--(think accent on the 'i' a la Richard Petty)
I want to jot a few thoughts to consider when you making the case to move. In some future blogs, I can write to the technical advantages, but in this one, I'll speak to some business considerations.

As enterprises look for different ways and means to reduce costs for IT & Application Infrastructure, Application Portfolio Management or APM has become more of a strategic initiative to better manage and optimize the application infrastructure. Using APM enterprises can make right decisions whether to tolerate, invest, migrate or retire applications based on their impact to business and value of the data they hold.

Taken from a Recent DB Newsletter, but worth a reprint. Btw, Lance is my boss and leads our global Migration Team.
The original from Database Insider is here
Migrating away from old legacy systems is a smart way to improve IT efficiency and cut costs--an imperative for many companies in today's economy. According to Lance Knowlton, Oracle's VP of platform migrations, migrating Sybase installations to Oracle has emerged as a sensible way to meet this need.
I saw this today regarding the Safe Switch Program update for Sybase and SQL Server.
(Informix and DB2 as well, btw)

I published an article with Tom and Mark late early 2009 around using Tuxedo. With the recent release of Tuxedo ART for mainframe rehosting, i thought it would be good to revisit this article.
It is actually an excerpt from the book on Modernization that Tom and I published in 2008. Stay tuned two more coming out in 2011 around Data Integration and Migration as well at Tuxedo.
Today WiPro announced a new initiative with Oracle with a focused center around Oracle Tuxedo ART for Mainframe Rehosting. We've been working with them very closely for some time and I'm excited about this partnership.

European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes speech on Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda at Open Forum Europe 2010 Summit in Brussels refocuses the EU Digital Agenda on open standards. I say the speech scores a 90/100, smooth, smart, a little vicious at the fringes, maybe? Anyway, it shows the strategy might age and implement well. This is Dutch pragmatism at its best.
At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010).
If the Digital Agenda was a bottle of wine and I were wine critic Robert Parker, I would say the Digital Agenda has "a great bouquet, many good elements, with astringent, dry and puckering mouth feel that will not please everyone, but still displaying some finesse. A somewhat controlled effort with no surprises and a few noticeable flaws in the delivery. Noticeably shorter aftertaste than advertised by the producers. Score: 85/100. Enjoy now".
There was a recent webcast about the new Tux ART solution that we released last month. Here is the link to hear Hassan talk about that
I'm excited to say that we've released our next generation of Re-hosting in 11g.
In fact I'm doing some hands-on labs now for our Systems Integrators in Italy in a couple of weeks and targeting Latin America next month.
If you are an SI, or Rehosting firm and are looking to become an Oracle Partner or get a better understanding of Tuxedo and how to use the workbench for rehosting...drop me a line.
Jason's Blog on Oracle Modernization Solutions
Hi folks
I won't apologize for taking so long to blog again, since that is what everyone does. You'll be fine.
Anyway, I wanted to write a quick review on Sue Harper's new book "Oracle SQL Developer 2.1".
Noticed my rate of contribution to the world of PM blogging has dropped off a bit in the last months as I have been spending more time in my new role of leading Delivery in the Oracle Consulting Managed Services in Western Europe (that was a lot of capital letters in a row…sorry for that)
Picked up on a nice blog entry courtesy of a tweet from Bas over at Project Shrink…
As part of Oracle Tax and Utilities commitment to integrating to Oracle technology there is a new whitepaper available on how to use and configure the prebuilt integration between Oracle Identity Manager and Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products.
The idea of the integration is that the IT group can deploy user records from Oracle Identity Manager to Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 (and above) based products. Identity Manager allows centralized security defintions for your enterprise and allows deployment to applications and infrastructure.
Today we are going to start a new experiment. My colleague - Sun's Corporate Sustainability Program Manager, Lori Duvall - and I are going to engage in a cross-blog dialog. A "diablog" if you will. The idea behind this diablog is to help us during these uncertain times to keep looking forward, even as our temptation is to only look back on all that we have done at Sun over the past three-plus years.
It wasn't all that long ago when outsourcing certain aspects of your business like basic software development or support services to save money was commonplace. Now, companies are discovering that sending work abroad may not be as cost-effective as once thought.

I've been working with OBIEE for a while now, but I've not actually gone through the Oracle By Example tutorials, so I figured it would be a good idea to do that.
I started looking at the first Oracle By Example OBIEE tutorial yesterday and came across an issue with a simple solution to share with you.
Whether you are a user or implementer of Smart View there comes a time when an upgrade is necessary. Since each user installs the smart view binaries on their workstation/laptop, the question of how to push a system-wide upgrade may arise. Fortunately this functionality is built into Essbase Administration Services.
