I've been following the various channels on the internet that brought information about what happened at Oracle's OpenWorld convention in San Francisco. OOW 2009 has now ended and what's left is a huge amount of information which will take some weeks to digest.
Oracle has done a tremendous job and I was impressed by the easy access to information via the internet such as the live video streams, tweets and coverage by Oracle and non-Oracle bloggers.
The elephant in the room was of course Fusion Applications, subject to rumours and gossip since Oracle first mentioned the ambitious project some years ago.
In his keynote on Wednesday, Larry Ellison told the audience that Fusion Apps are "code complete and version 1 is going to ship next year". A claim that left most of the crowd still anxious. However some information is already available on the interwebs so you can get an early picture.
Personally, I believe that many parts of the Fusion architecture are already available as mature products such as the Fusion Middleware and Application Integration Architecture which were used to tie together heterogenous applications such as Siebel CRM and Oracle E-Business Suite in a series of slick demos in Thomas Kurian's keynote on Monday.
What the world is waiting for is a both a set of prebuilt rich enterprise apps and the respective toolset to create and modify them which brings the information together in a single UI. I am quite sure that we will see that released next year.
I think, as a developer, it's a good idea to spend some time learning JDeveloper and ADF as they are the tools to build these applications.
There were also many interviews with top Oracle managers beside the OOW of which I found this one with Anthony Lye which mentions Siebel 8.12 (sic!) as the next release (wouldn't that rather be 8.1.2?).
Of course there was so much more like Oracle BI EE 11g live on stage (also during Thomas Kurian's keynote) and the SUN Oracle Exadata V2 machine and...
"It's an honor to be in the company of so many brilliant, innovative and entrepreneurial individuals as I came out on stage - I feel my IQ shot up 10 points!"
have a nice day
