SQL Developer 2.1 Book Review and Migrations

Hi folks
I won't apologize for taking so long to blog again, since that is what everyone does. You'll be fine.

Anyway, I wanted to write a quick review on Sue Harper's new book "Oracle SQL Developer 2.1".

Identity Manager Integration whitepaper

As part of Oracle Tax and Utilities commitment to integrating to Oracle technology there is a new whitepaper available on how to use and configure the prebuilt integration between Oracle Identity Manager and Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products.

The idea of the integration is that the IT group can deploy user records from Oracle Identity Manager to Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 (and above) based products. Identity Manager allows centralized security defintions for your enterprise and allows deployment to applications and infrastructure.

The Start of a Conversation

Today we are going to start a new experiment. My colleague - Sun's Corporate Sustainability Program Manager, Lori Duvall - and I are going to engage in a cross-blog dialog. A "diablog" if you will.  The idea behind this diablog is to help us during these uncertain times to keep looking forward, even as our temptation is to only look back on all that we have done at Sun over the past three-plus years.

Looking Beyond Outsourcing

It wasn't all that long ago when outsourcing certain aspects of your business like basic software development or support services to save money was commonplace. Now, companies are discovering that sending work abroad may not be as cost-effective as once thought.

Running OBIEE Oracle By Example Tutorials

I've been working with OBIEE for a while now, but I've not actually gone through the Oracle By Example tutorials, so I figured it would be a good idea to do that.

I started looking at the first Oracle By Example OBIEE tutorial yesterday and came across an issue with a simple solution to share with you.

Automatically Deploy Smart View Upgrade

Whether you are a user or implementer of Smart View there comes a time when an upgrade is necessary. Since each user installs the smart view binaries on their workstation/laptop, the question of how to push a system-wide upgrade may arise. Fortunately this functionality is built into Essbase Administration Services.

Start with Good Planning

Want to Have a Smooth Running Application?

Last year, I wrote an article that talked about key issues that IT need to consider when deploying enterprise class business applications. This year for OpenWorld, I decided to follow up the article with a breakout session to discuss the topic. There is a saying that “three minds are better than one”, so I recruited Keith Peters and Deep Ram, who had close to 30 years of combined experience working with application customers, to help put together the presentation.

Copyright/left at the centre of open source business strategies

Business strategies

Below is a rough draft of the cornerstone slide for a new presentation deck I am putting together to explain the various business strategies for monetizing open source software. The aim is to explain every single existing strategy using the elements on this one slide (although I am yet to test it out).

In our previous discussions about business strategies we have noted that there are four elements that shape a business strategy around open source software: the open source software license; the development strategy; the end user license strategy; and the revenue trigger.

Enterprise Architecture Success

Now you see it, now you don’t

All three parts of the Arch2Arch Podcast covering Enterprise Architecture visibility are now available.

This series of programs grew out of this Tweet, posted by Oracle ACE Director Lonneke Dikmans a few weeks ago:

EA is not dead

Long live the EA

In his latest blog post – Is Enterprise Architecture dead - Richard Veryard argues the demise of the role of EA stating:

“I can't see much recognition or respect for the value of "Enterprise Architecture" except among the ranks of EA practitioners. In many organizations, the function of enterprise architecture is squeezed or marginalized, if not rejected altogether.”

EAS on Windows 2000 Advanced Server

One Good Reason to Stick with Supported Versions

I have been using Essbase for over 14 years now and have got it to run just about anywhere. Sometimes it took a few tweaks and sometimes, such as in getting it to run on Windows 7, is quite a bit more involved. Still, I got it working.

Recently, there was a post on the Network 54 board about a problem getting EAS 11.1.1.3 running on Windows 2000 Advanced Server:

Classifying Merchandise

Hierarchy, Taxonomy & Ontology

There are three related yet often confused terms that creep into conversations about retail. I started a conversation on that topic over at the ARTS Linked-in discussion board that has some interesting comments. The three terms are (with definitions from Wikipedia):

Decisions, decisions, decisions

Gotta Rant

Sometimes, you just need a good rant, don't you? Well, here's one from me.

You know what completely jerks my chain? Revisiting the same decision over and over. and over. and over. I'm not talking about requirement changes. Same requirement (user story), just a different day (SSDD).

Are your partners selling YOUR products?

Leveraging indirect channels

Companies are leveraging their indirect channels more than ever today. With reduced hiring and marketing budgets, indirect channels (partners) become a great way to increase your reach in the marketplace. The challenge for companies is to ensure that these partners are actually selling YOUR products. There is a resurgence in partner channels and PRM (Partner Relationship Management) solutions which are a platform for companies and partners to collaborate on.

ssh access to multiple servers

Batch processing

It is always the same: You are used to a technique like

  • accessing server via ssh with ssh-keys
  •

But in some environments you are not allowed or you just don't want to put your authorized_keys to the servers, which you want to access. But how to automate logins to this servers?

Data Visualisation

Best Practices: Part 3

Edward R Tufte: http://www.edwardtufte.com Since the early 1980s he has provided lots of thoughts around how we view and perceive data. One concept (among the many in his several books) I find very useful is the data-ink ratio, as it's name suggests it was born back when screens and digital information were not a ubiquitous as they are now, but the same concept applies.

PyCon talk review

Useful techniques you'd never known were out thereb

We've got a record number of volunteers working on PyCon's Program Committee - the group that reviews talk proposals and decides which ones go on the schedule. And it's a good thing, because we've also got a record number of proposals - 179! (For comparison, PyCon 2008 got 118.)

Right now, we're in the fun part - going through the proposed talks and yelling, "Oooh! Ooooh! I want that one!" Just looking through the proposed talks is a great Python education all by itself - you find out about useful packages and techniques you'd never known were out there.

In praise of vendor shipped AMI's

...and virtual machines

Roman Stanek is one of those guys who consistently gets things right and his point around AMIs and Virtual Machines not being SaaS is absolutely 100% spot on. These aren't SaaS solutions they are PaaS solutions and they do indeed leave a huge amount of work for the developer to do.
